Why was “Always Be Sustaining” created? I grew up in the American cities of Gary, Indiana and Green Bay, Wisconsin, and then served in Vietnam, three places with very different but significant sustainability challenges. After receiving two degrees at UW-Madison (a B.A. in Economics and an M.P.P.A. in Natural Resources Policy and Administration) in the 1970s and then working for several businesses and a number of primarily energy-related government and non-profit organizations, I fell in love with sustainability teaching and research, which led to my Ph.D. in Strategic Management at the University of Georgia (U.S.A.) in the early 90s. There, I deepened my interest, knowledge, and experience in sustainability (both environmental and socio-economic), and was certain this was the career for me. Thirty years later, I am glad I was able to teach several thousand students and publish several dozen sustainability-related books and articles, along with providing sustainability-related service to my universities and profession, delivering numerous presentations, and consulting on a half-dozen sustainability projects.
But, over the last couple of years or so, I have come to realize that our sustainability progress as a species has been distressingly slow in those three-plus decades and that I needed to do more than teach and research with some occasional consulting in this vital area of human survival. I felt it necessary to try to sustainably “do more, better, faster” and to encourage others to join me in the effort to help move our cultures toward the achievement of long-term quality of life, which is my definition of sustainability. Hence the creation of Always Be Sustaining, which is a “not-for-much-profit” sustainability service directly providing coaching, consultation, communication, and collaboration services to as many individuals, small groups, organizations, and communities as possible, at least those whom I could reach from Madison, Wisconsin, where I recently re-located. These services include one-on-one and small group (such as household or green team) sustainability advising and organizational and community sustainability consulting, training and reporting. Throughout all of these activities, my goal for Always Be Sustaining is to be as collaborative as possible, contributing new ideas and inspiration where appropriate, with an orientation to co-creating and co-evolving effective sustainability habits, innovations, policies, practices, and results.
Always Be Sustaining welcomes a wide set of sustainability management perspectives, including those which are focused on Certified B Corps and/or Benefit Corporations, for-profit entities established over the past decade to benefit society and the environment, and to do so transparently with a orientation toward multiple stakeholder needs and value. In fact, the firm has already itself received “pending” status as a Certified B Corp from the non-profit group B Lab (U.S.A.), and is in the process of advancing the “B” movement in Madison and throughout the state of Wisconsin. I close this first blog posting with an offer to work with any individuals, small groups, organizations, and communities who are also interested in advancing environmental and socio-economic sustainability. Contact us at http://alwaysbesustaining.com to help us all, individually and collectively, move further and faster toward addressing some of the world’s most difficult challenges and most promising quality of life opportunities!
